Results from the PDML Camera-Count Survey

In 2000 and 2001 Albano Garcia conducted a survey among the members of the PDML. He wanted to find out how many and what kinds of Pentax cameras everyone owned.

In order to make sense of the raw survey results, I performed the following operations:

  1. The USA and international versions of the same body models were counted together.
  2. The “normal” and “SE” models were counted together.
  3. The body models that are extremely similar to each-other were counted together:
    • MZ-3 was merged with the MZ-5n/ZX-5n.
    • P3/P30/P3n/P30n/P30t were put together.
  4. Bodies with the different mount types were colored in different colors: screw-mount cameras in orange, manual focus K-mount cameras (“K MF”) in green, auto focus K-mount cameras (“K AF”) in blue, and medium-format cameras (“MF”) in purple.
  5. The “popularity” of each body was calculated by dividing the number of reported samples into the total number of reported bodies.
  6. The bodies were sorted by decreasing popularity.

The figure below shows the results:
